The GED for homeschoolers in South Africa
What homeschooling families in South Africa should know about the GED: the age rule, the university exemption position, and when it does and does not fit.
All guides · Reviewed 7 October 2026
Short answer: Homeschooled learners in South Africa can write the GED from age 17 with an age waiver, or from 18 without one; nobody aged 16 or younger may write. Since 2020 a South African GED no longer qualifies for a USAf university exemption, so families aiming for a public university degree should plan a different school-leaving route.
The two facts to plan around
- Age. The GED cannot be written in South Africa before 17. A learner who finishes their schoolwork early cannot use the GED to finish early.
- University exemption. USAf's Matriculation Board says not to apply for an exemption with a GED obtained in South Africa after 2019. The GED is therefore not a direct route to degree study at public universities.
When the GED can suit a homeschooled learner
- The learner plans to study at a private institution that has confirmed in writing that it accepts the GED.
- The family expects to move abroad, or the learner plans to study in a country where the GED is accepted.
- The learner wants a recognised school-level credential for work, a trade or a certificate course.
- The learner is 17 or older and other school-leaving routes have not worked out.
When to choose another route
If a degree at a public South African university is the goal, look at qualifications that carry exemption, such as the National Senior Certificate, the IEB, or international school-leaving qualifications that USAf recognises. Check the current USAf rules for the specific qualification.
Preparing at home
The GED suits independent study: four subjects, clear content, and tests booked when the learner is ready. A self-paced online course gives structure and marked practice without fixed class times. Parents can try our free sample lessons with their learner to judge the level, and read what is on each test.
Common questions
Can a 16-year-old write the GED in South Africa?
No. The minimum age is 17 with an age waiver, or 18 without one.
Can homeschoolers use the GED to get into university in South Africa?
Not directly for degree study at public universities, because a South African GED obtained after 2019 does not qualify for a USAf exemption. Some private institutions accept it.
Is the GED a good matric alternative for homeschoolers?
It can be for learners aged 17 and over whose goals fit what the GED offers. Families aiming for public university degree study should choose a route that carries exemption.
